Congo’s Ebola outbreak surpasses 5,000 deaths, with more than 10,000 cases reported

More than 10,000 cases have been confirmed in the country since the ongoing outbreak of the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola was first reported in mid-May this year. This makes it the deadliest and fastest-growing Ebola outbreak in the country’s history.

There is no approved vaccine or specific treatment for the Bundibugyo strain, but development is underway. Earlier in October, the WHO announced that the first clinical trial of a vaccine had begun.

Ebola cases have also been confirmed in Kenya, Uganda and Nigeria.
