More than 5,300 people have died in the ongoing Ebola outbreak in Central Africa, with the highest number of deaths recorded in Congo-Kinshasa, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

According to the latest figures compiled by the CDC, the Ebola epidemic has claimed 5,376 lives. Most deaths were recorded in Congo-Kinshasa, with two in neighboring Uganda and two in Kenya.

A total of 10,444 Ebola cases have been confirmed since the epidemic broke out in Congo-Kinshasa in mid-May this year. The fatality rate is just over 50 percent.

The virus spread across national borders several times during October, including the first recorded case in Nigeria.

The current Ebola outbreak involves the Bundibugyo variant of the virus, also known as hemorrhagic fever.
