Among the suspects are the captain, the chief officer and the officer in charge who were responsible for the vessel's navigation, operation and functionality, according to a press release from the Finnish Central Criminal Police.
“In the preliminary investigation, it has been investigated and assessed, among other things, what responsibility these three people had regarding the vessel's condition and to what extent they should have discovered that the vessel had lost its anchor in the sea,” says the investigation leader, Detective Superintendent Sami Liimatainen at the Central Criminal Police in the press release.
It was at the end of December last year that the oil tanker is suspected to have dragged its anchor on the seabed and damaged several important underwater cables between Finland and Estonia.
The Central Criminal Police suspected already in January that gross sabotage was behind the incident and have since investigated whether there was intent. The preliminary investigation is now completed and has been handed over to the prosecutor general.
