82-year-old Carroll is being investigated for perjury in her two civil lawsuits against Trump, sources told CNN and The New York Times.
In one of Carroll's lawsuits, she accused Trump of raping her at a department store in the mid-1990s. In May 2023, a court ruled that Carroll could not prove that Trump raped her, but that he was guilty of sexual assault.
The New York Times describes the criminal investigation as the latest chapter in President Trump's campaign of revenge against perceived enemies. The Justice Department has investigated a number of people Trump has identified as opponents, including New York Attorney General Letitia James and former FBI Director James Comey.
