Dry Winter Leaves Southern Sweden with Critically Low Groundwater Levels

Groundwater levels in southern Sweden are unusually low, reports P4 Malmöhus. Unusually little precipitation during the winter has meant that water reservoirs have not been replenished as they usually are.

It is unusually low for the season. It is a pretty bad starting point for the summer, says Eva Hellstrand, groundwater expert at the Geological Survey of Sweden SGU, to the channel.

From Skåne and up to southern Dalarna and Gästrikland, the groundwater levels are much below normal. In Skåne, the precipitation during the first three months of the year has been the lowest in over twenty years.

In Gotland, a watering ban was introduced as early as April 15 due to the low groundwater levels.

There is now a risk of water shortage for the summer.

The major replenishment takes place during the autumn and winter. If we are unlucky now, we won't get a proper replenishment until October, November, and then we'll have to live on the groundwater we have now, and then it simply won't be enough.

Corrected: In an earlier version, an incorrect figure was given for the groundwater level in Skåne over the past three months.
