Sometimes a fourth place can be like a victory, at least if you have made the journey that the Swedish long jumper made on her way to the Indoor World Championships in Toruń, Poland.
The talent has been there, unfortunately so have the injury problems.
This led her to make the drastic decision to change her take-off foot and start jumping with her left foot instead of her right foot.
For a long jumper, it is a revolutionary change and before the World Championships, the Swede had a season best of 6.67 meters compared to her personal record of 6.95 meters.
Internationally, the Swede's result was the 15th best this year, so the start of Sunday's competition was as pleasing as it was surprising.
Last in the starting field, she jumped 6.78 meters and was then in second place. This was changed during the competition to first bronze and finally to fourth when, among others, Larissa Iapichino jumped 6.84 meters, which was enough for silver behind Agate de Sousa of Portugal, who won with 6.92. Natalia Linares of Colombia now took bronze instead of Sagnia.
"A medal would have been the icing on the cake, but honestly, I'm back. I'm so grateful for the work we've done," says Sagnia in an interview with SVT.
When asked if she herself has had doubts, she replies:
Absolutely not, otherwise I would never have dared to try. The only thing you have to lose is that it wouldn't work out, but you just have to be patient.
"I've reached a much better level now. This is a competition that I can take with me," she tells SVT.
