The 26-year-old from Eslöv barely seemed to believe it was true when the ball bounced straight into the cup on hole number 6 - the 15th in Åberg's playing order for the day - during the second round of the PGA Tour competition Texas Open outside San Antonio.
Åberg's shot from just over 100 meters was perfect, resulting in an eagle on the par 4 hole and temporarily taking him into a shared lead with Scotsman Robert MacIntyre.
Last time to fold
In addition to the eagle, Åberg also made four birdies, but unfortunately finished with a bogey on the final hole. He went five under par for the day and is alone in second place, four strokes behind MacIntyre, one of the few who had a better Good Friday (-8 for the day) than Åberg.
"It was tough with the wind today. But overall we handled it well. With the driver I was about the same level as yesterday, but I was a little better towards the greens," Ludvig Åberg told the PGA Tour website.
The Swede's inspired play is pleasing for several reasons. It suggests, among other things, that Åberg has forgotten his collapse in the prestigious The Players three weeks ago, when he lost three leads during the final round.
"I've had time to think about it and reflect, but I've also had time to move on. That's probably the most important thing for me, to come here and show that I've put that behind me," says Åberg.
Major on the way
It also bodes well for the first major of the year, the Masters at Augusta next week.
"For me, golf is about giving yourself the chance to win tournaments. I don't feel like I've done particularly well in the last year, so it's really nice to see that starting to happen now," says Åberg.
Alex Norén also played well during the round, climbing 22 places to a tied 23rd place. He is now at -5 overall.
