The 26-year-old from Eslöv barely seemed to believe it was true when the ball bounced straight into the cup on the 6th hole – the 15th in Åberg's playing order for the day – during the second round of the PGA Tour competition Valero Texas Open outside San Antonio.
Åberg's shot from just over 100 meters was perfect, resulting in an eagle on the par 4 hole and temporarily taking him into a shared lead with Scotsman Robert MacIntyre.
In addition to the eagle, Åberg also made four birdies but unfortunately finished with a bogey on the final hole. He went five under for the day and is provisionally in sole second place, four strokes behind MacIntyre, one of the few who had a better Good Friday (–8 for the day) than Åberg.
The Swede's inspired play is pleasing for several reasons. First, Åberg seems to have forgotten his collapse in the prestigious The Players three weeks ago, when he lost a three-way lead during the final round. Second, it bodes well for the year's first major, the US Masters at Augusta next week.
The second day of play in Texas is underway. The other three Swedes – Alex Norén, Pontus Nyholm and Jesper Svensson – are still out on the course.
