Over a hundred people have been detained and accused of treason following the unrest that broke out in Tanzania in connection with the elections at the end of October.

One of AFP's sources states that as many as 138 people were formally charged on Friday, while another source speaks of over 100 people.

According to legal documents, they are accused of having “intent to obstruct” the election and intimidating the executive branch by causing serious damage to state property.

In addition to treason, the suspects are also accused of criminal conspiracy.

Authorities deployed security forces to quell riots and opposition protests in connection with the election. The death toll is unknown, but the opposition Chadema party claims that over 1,000 people were killed during the unrest.
