Trump calls in a post on Truth Social the newspaper for "one of the worst and most degenerate newspapers in our country's history" and claims that it has become a mouthpiece for the Democrats.
According to the post, the newspaper is being sued for $15 billion, close to 140 billion kronor, for defamation and slander.
"The New York Times has been allowed to freely lie, smear and defame me for far too long", claims Donald Trump without presenting any evidence.
The New York Times criticizes Trump's lawsuit.
"This lawsuit is without foundation", the newspaper writes and continues:
"It lacks all legitimate legal claims and is instead an attempt to suppress and deter independent reporting. The New York Times will not be intimidated by threatening tactics."
Already last week, Trump threatened to sue the newspaper, after it reported on a drawing that had been given to the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Among other things, the newspaper, like several other media outlets, has written that the drawing had a signature that resembles Trump's.
The President sued the newspaper The Wall Street Journal last summer for $10 billion for the reporting on Epstein.
