The number of students who feel they have been subjected to sexual harassment at school is many more than the incidents reported to the Discrimination Ombudsman (DO), a report shows.

Reports to the Swedish National Education Service indicate that schools are failing to investigate sexual harassment, despite being aware of it.

"A school that becomes aware that something has happened that may be sexual harassment but does not investigate what happened or take reasonable measures to stop continued harassment violates the Discrimination Act," says DO Lars Arrhenius in a press release.

The report also shows that discrimination remains a major problem in all parts of society. Surveys indicate that between 600,000 and one million people feel they are subject to discrimination each year.

DO recommends that the government urgently investigate the issue of stronger sanctions against discrimination.
