During Tuesday evening, Djurgården announced that the football club's chairman Lars-Erik Sjöberg is leaving after having held the position since 2013. No reason for the departure was stated.
Shortly afterwards, Expressen published an investigation revealing that Sjöberg had spread messages from xenophobic debaters on social media.
"Didn't do anything wrong"
Later in the evening, Lars-Erik Sjöberg confirmed that he had resigned due to the investigation.
"Even though I don't think I've done anything wrong, I've understood that Expressen's article has damaged the trust of members and the general public in me, or has damaged it. That's the reason I chose to resign as chairman earlier today, and it's with great sorrow that I made that decision", he wrote in a statement published on the club's website during Tuesday evening.
"Unfortunate timing"
The club's acting chairman Erik Gozzi answered questions in connection with the press conference ahead of Thursday's match against Chelsea.
I've been chairman for about twelve hours and got thrown into the middle of a week where we're going to meet Chelsea. The biggest match in Djurgården's history. Clearly, it's tough, says Gozzi.
What Lars-Erik Sjöberg did on his private social media, I don't think I'll comment on. However, he's made the assessment that he's resigning as chairman of Djurgården Football.
We in the board share that assessment. That's as far as I'll go in that matter.
The players were informed on Wednesday morning about the developments surrounding Sjöberg. Gozzi doesn't think it will affect them ahead of the match, but he regrets the situation.
It's clear that it's bloody unfortunate timing, says Gozzi.
