Hundreds of disarmed Congolese soldiers and police are being escorted, along with their families, from the city of Goma to Kinshasa, the capital of Congo-Kinshasa, announces the International Red Cross Committee (ICRC).
The soldiers and police have sought refuge at the UN mission Monusco since January, when the conflict in eastern Congo escalated as the rebel group M23 took control of Goma. UN experts and several Western governments accuse neighboring Rwanda of supporting M23, which Rwanda's government denies.
The evacuation is expected to take several days, says Myriam Favier at ICRC.
