Bosnian Serbs in Bosnia and Herzegovina went to the polls to elect a replacement for Milorad Dodik, who was the president of Republika Srpska, the Serbian part of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Dodik was ousted by the Bosnian electoral authority in February of this year. However, his and his party's candidate Sinisa Karan appears to have won the presidential election, according to initial results.
But the election result was close. Karan received 50.9 percent of the vote, while challenger Branko Blanusa received 47.8 percent, according to the election commission. The results were announced after 93 percent of the votes had been counted.
The deposed president Dodik was previously sentenced to prison and banned from holding political office for six years due to "separatist actions", but escaped prison with a fine instead.
Around 1.2 million people were eligible to vote and could choose between six candidates.
