The US State Department has renamed the US Institute of Peace (USIP) after President Donald Trump to highlight "the foremost negotiator in our country's history," the department said.

The institute will now be called the Donald J Trump Institute of Peace.

Founded by former US President Ronald Reagan, USIP is a Congress-funded, independent, non-profit organization dedicated to preventing and resolving international conflicts.

In February, Trump signed an executive order aimed at dismantling the institute. Among other things, almost everyone who worked there and was based in Washington was fired, according to American media.

Trump has been open about seeing himself as a peacemaker, and has expressed a desire to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
