One has the right to be a believing person and practice one's religion, but democracy has precedence, she says to the news agency Ritzau.

She believes that the current legislation has flaws that facilitate social control and oppression of women at educational institutions.

Since 2018, there has been a ban on wearing a face mask that makes it illegal to wear, for example, a Muslim niqab in a public place. But it has not yet applied to schools and universities, something she now wants to change.

She also objects to the fact that prayer rooms have been set up at several universities and colleges. The responsible ministers should clarify in dialogue with the universities that prayer rooms do not belong there, says the Prime Minister.

In response to the question of whether access to prayer rooms cannot contribute to social mobility for young people who come from strictly religious homes, she replies that the Danish society cannot be established under fanaticism.

You're welcome to have your religion, but when you're at school, you're there to be at school and take part in your education, says Mette Frederiksen.
