Jyske Bank Boxen was boiling when Nikolaj Ehlers equalized to 1–1 after 17.43 in the third period. Nick Olesen then made history as a match hero, scoring 2–1 after 19.11.
After the match, the Danish players stayed on the ice for a long time and received standing ovations from the home crowd.
Denmark, with Swedish Mikael Gath as national team captain, started the World Championship tournament on home soil with three straight losses and then had to fight to make it to the quarterfinals at all.
They managed to do so.
"Proud"
Then came the quarterfinal miracle, which must be ranked as one of the biggest upsets in World Championship history.
It's completely surreal. I don't have many words. It's the craziest thing I've ever been a part of. Damn, I'm proud of these guys, it's insane, says Nikolaj Ehlers in Viaplay.
I think we played an incredibly good match over all 60 minutes.
48-year-old Scanian Gath was a bit more composed after the feat.
Really happy and proud, he says.
Scoring a goal when you pull the goalie and then Nick decides it in the end, it becomes completely crazy good.
Crosby Disappointed
The last time Canada didn't play for medals in an ice hockey World Championship was in Belarus 2014, when the team was eliminated by Finland in the quarterfinal.
Disappointed. We got better and better (earlier) during the tournament. Tonight, we weren't our best, but we still managed to find a way to take the lead. A tough environment here on the road, says Canada's superstar and team captain Sidney Crosby in Viaplay's broadcast.
The team, led by Crosby, was pressured all the way in the quarterfinal, which was 0–0 after two periods.
First, 5.17 in, Philadelphia defenseman Travis Sanheim broke HV71 goalie Frederik Dichow's zero, before the Danish turnaround came at the end of the match.
Saturday's semifinal opponent Switzerland crushed Austria 6–0 in Herning earlier.
The semifinals – Sweden and the USA meet in the other – are held in Avicii arena in Stockholm.
