The Danish government no longer wants the police to seize narcotics when it comes to society's most vulnerable citizens, nor for possession to lead to a trial.

For many in this group, narcotics are a condition of life. They are necessary to get started in the day and to do things, says Elderly Minister Mette Kierkgaard (The Moderate Party).

The proposal is part of the Danish government's so-called dignity reform, which will be presented in the near future.

The decriminalization covers individuals suffering from severe mental illness, having an addiction, and being homeless. A total of approximately 12,000 citizens are estimated to meet the above criteria.

Denmark has previously decriminalized narcotics in special areas near the country's drug user rooms. The new proposal covers the entire country.
