Denmark is to buy eight ground-based air defense systems from four different European manufacturers. The total sum is estimated to exceed 50 billion Danish kronor, equivalent to over 73 billion Swedish kronor.
Thus, it constitutes the largest Danish arms purchase in history, according to Danish media.
Denmark has not owned any air defense of its own since 2004, and the investment is now being made in light of Russia's war in Ukraine and the escalated geopolitical tensions. Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen calls it a "quantum leap" for Denmark's ability to defend itself.
By choosing European-made systems, the American Patriot system is being rejected. The selected systems are manufactured by producers from Norway, Germany, France, and the French-Italian Eurosam.
