Danish children will no longer be allowed to use social media. That is the meaning of a political agreement, announces Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. I hope that we as a society now send a clear signal that we will become better at taking care of children and young people, she says.

The Danish age limit for social media will be 15 years, but with permission for parents to be able to give children access to the platforms from the age of 13.

I see it as us clearing up the problems that social media and phones create for our children, says Frederiksen.

The agreement has been reached between the government, the Conservative People's Party and the Radical Left. However, several parties dropped out of the negotiations, as the proposal does not go far enough – "too unambitious", the Socialist People's Party, the Unity List and the Alternative write in a press release, according to the Ritzau news agency.

Mobile phone ban in schools soon

But Frederiksen sees the agreement as a breakthrough in the fight to get young people to reduce their screen time.

It's a balance between what we think we can do with regulation and legislation, and that there should be a space as a family, she says.

The Prime Minister also says that the government is also working on a proposal to ban mobile phones in schools.

The new agreement places a lot of focus on preventing digital abuse and providing information to schools and parents to facilitate the implementation of a ban.

Limitless challenges

However, the parties admit that a ban may be difficult to implement, as most social media is not Danish and several already have age limits.

"This means that national rules are not enough. Borderless platforms with borderless challenges require borderless solutions," it writes, announcing that Denmark will therefore "lead the way in the EU to secure children's digital rights."

In 2024, Australia became the first country in the world to introduce a law that could see social media companies fined millions if they fail to ban people under the age of 16 from their platforms. The law comes into effect in December of this year.
