Earlier this week, Becerra trailed Steve Hilton in the vote count, but then overtook him.
That didn't stop US President Donald Trump from congratulating Hilton on his victory the other day, while at the same time making baseless claims that election fraud had disadvantaged Republicans. Hilton is originally British and has been a commentator on Fox News.
Xavier Becerra, who comes from an immigrant background, has served as the state's attorney general and is health secretary under President Joe Biden. He has pledged to follow in the footsteps of current governor Gavin Newsom in California's fight against Trump's rule.
