Extreme monsoon rains have caused brutal flooding in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. The death toll has now topped 300 and continues to rise.

In southern Thailand, a total of over 145 deaths have been reported, most of them in the province of Songkhla.

The morgue is full, a provincial official told the AFP news agency.

The bodies are currently being placed in refrigerated trucks, according to reports.

In Sumatra, Indonesia, the number of confirmed deaths is up to around 175. 53-year-old Misniati tells AFP that her neighborhood was flooded in no time when she was on her way home on Friday morning.

I tried to run to our house to warn my husband, but the water rose to my waist.

Despite dangerous currents, she managed to get home, and by then the water was almost up to her neck.

The annual monsoon season often brings landslides, floods and water-borne diseases, and scientists fear it will continue to get worse and longer due to emissions from human burning of fossil fuels.
