The death toll in the deadly floods in Southeast Asia continues to rise.

In Indonesia, the death toll on the island of Sumatra has risen sharply, to 248. Rescue efforts are underway at the scene to help people living in the affected areas. Many people are still missing.

The death toll in Sri Lanka has also been significantly increased. On Saturday, 123 people were confirmed dead. Torrential rain in the country led to rivers and dams overflowing, which caused landslides. Schools and government buildings were closed on Friday.

Thailand has also been hit hard by the floods. On Friday, more than 145 deaths were confirmed in the southern parts of the country.

The annual monsoon season often brings landslides, floods and water-borne diseases, and scientists fear it will continue to get worse and longer due to emissions from human burning of fossil fuels.
