Authorities said the attacks targeted apartments and tents as well as a police station in Gaza City. At least six children were killed in the attacks, which took place early Saturday.

"The airstrikes over the past 24 hours have been the worst we have seen since October. We are still waiting for the Rafah crossing to open, but until then we must remember how much people are still suffering," Save the Children writes in a comment on the attacks.

The Israeli military said the strikes were in response to eight armed Palestinians being seen leaving a tunnel in Rafah in southern Gaza on Friday, in violation of the peace agreement, and that they therefore struck "four commanders and additional terrorists."

Qatar and Egypt condemn Israel's "repeated violations" of the ceasefire and call on both parties to exercise restraint, in Egypt's case ahead of the opening of the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt.

Israel said on Friday that the crossing would open in a limited manner on Sunday. Those wishing to cross will first undergo security checks, a process that will be overseen by the EU.

The opening of the crossing is part of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.

The Gaza war, which began with Hamas's attack on Israel in October 2023, has left Gaza in ruins and killed tens of thousands. In October last year, Israel and Hamas agreed to the first phase of a peace plan negotiated by the United States, among others.

Both sides have since accused each other of violations.
