At the beginning of the week, it was discovered that one of Malmö's major sewer lines had suffered an acute leak. The wastewater was pumped out into the canal so that the leak could be repaired.
By Friday night, the flow of sewage had stopped and cleanup work could begin. But hundreds of eels and other fish lay dead on the canal banks.
It is not unusual for fish to die in connection with a so-called overflow, explains Gunnar Blomé, head of department at the environmental administration in Malmö.
There is a slight lack of oxygen, but we need to follow up in detail what happened. It is worrying that it has been so extensive.
On Monday, an extended sampling of the water will be carried out.
