The police in Denmark have mapped what are described as criminal families. The result is a decision to place 17 designated families under special national surveillance.

In addition, up to 100 additional families will be monitored locally in the country's police regions.

The purpose is to collect intelligence about the families, which can form the basis for further investigations and interventions.

The 17 families consist of around 700 people, of whom almost every third is under 15 years of age.

Members of the 17 families have accumulated a total of 1,230 convictions over the past five years, including for violent, weapons and drug offenses.
