The National Police Board's mapping will follow after Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard (S) has tasked them with examining how to best gain an overview of criminal families or clans.
Hummelgaard has previously stated that he wants to explore the possibility of equating clans with criminal gangs, so that a special law, the country's "gang paragraph", can also be used against the clans. Anyone convicted under the paragraph risks a doubled sentence.
The mapped families have a total of 636 members, of which 119 are found in the police investigation database. This makes preventive work to break criminal habits "a great challenge", writes the police.
The police define criminal clans as families where "a large part" of members in at least two generations either belong to a criminal organization or are considered professional criminals.
"I now want to ask the police to start monitoring them in the same way as they keep track of criminal gangs", says Hummelgaard in a statement.
