The change in the law means that the police will no longer confiscate drugs during personal searches.
"We are now extending a hand to people who live very chaotic lives on the streets and saying that even those with messy existences should be given a place," says Minister of Social Affairs Sophie Hæstorp Andersen (S) in a press release.
The so-called “dignity reform”, which was presented this summer, is a collaboration between the government, the Socialist People’s Party and the Conservative People’s Party.
The proposals also include making it easier for vulnerable Danes with substance abuse problems to have contact with authorities and access to shelters.
