The assessed risk situation applies to the southern Lapland mountains, western Vindelfjällen, Kebnekaisefjällen and Abisko/Riksgränsfjällen, according to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency's Avalanche Forecasts website.

The danger is significant - which means a three on the five-point scale.

Weaknesses exist far down in the fragile snowpack and it takes very little for skiers, snowboarders and snowmobilers to trigger avalanches that can become extensive.

The advice is to exercise great caution and to avoid steep terrain and the terrain below steep slopes. Leeward slopes are particularly risky.

In the western Härjedalsfjällen and southern Jämtlandfjällen, the avalanche danger is moderate.

The forecasts are valid until 6:00 p.m. on Monday.

Facts: The avalanche scale

Avalanche danger is divided into a five-point scale:

1. Low danger. Conditions are generally safe. Snow may be unstable in isolated places. Avalanches unlikely.

2. Moderate danger. Hazardous conditions in parts of the terrain. It is possible for people to trigger avalanches, but spontaneous avalanches are unlikely.

3. Significant hazard. Hazardous conditions. Human-triggered avalanches are likely, and spontaneous avalanches are possible.

4. High danger. Very dangerous conditions. Very likely to have spontaneous avalanches and for people to trigger avalanches.

5. Very high danger. Human-triggered and spontaneous avalanches are certain to occur.
