"After a long and brave fight against cancer, we are devastated to announce that Michael D'Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D'Angelo, has passed away and left this life today, October 14, 2025,” says his family in a statement that continues:
”We are sad that he can only leave dear memories to his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of exceptionally moving music he leaves behind."
D'Angelo began his career as a songwriter for other artists, but established himself as a solo artist with his debut album ”Brown Sugar” from 1995. Also his two later albums, ”Voodoo” from 2000 and ”Black Messiah” from 2014, were critically acclaimed.
The artist was nominated for 14 Grammys and won four – two of them for best r&b album for ”Voodoo” and ”Black Messiah”.
Among the most famous songs are ”Lady”, ”Cruisin'”, ”Really love”. He was perhaps most famous for ”Untitled (How does it feel)” and the song's music video where he himself appeared bare-chested, which made him a kind of involuntary sex symbol, according to Variety.
D'Angelo also collaborated with artists such as Lauryn Hill, Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z and Q-Tip.
