After a goalless first period, it was Winnipeg's Mark Scheifele who scored the leading goal against Dallas early in the second period. Shortly before the match, the star center had received the news that his father had suddenly passed away, 68 years old.
He has said that it was what his father had wished, said coach Scott Arniel before the match about Scheifele's decision to play.
Winnipeg's leading goal was followed by a relatively quick equalizer by Dallas.
With barely eight minutes left of regular playing time, it looked like Winnipeg would be able to take the lead again – when Dallas goalkeeper Jake Oettinger made an incredible save. Oettinger managed to shift his body weight and throw himself to the opposite side to stop a shot from Winnipeg's Mason Appleton.
The match went to overtime, where Dallas' Thomas Harley scored the decisive goal in powerplay, after goal-scorer Mark Scheifele had drawn a penalty for Winnipeg.
Dallas thus advances to the semifinals, where they will meet Edmonton.
After the match, Scheifele was comforted by both his teammates and the opponents from Dallas.
To go through what he has done and still perform in that way, I am so proud of him. And his father would have been so proud of him. He wanted to win so badly, says coach Scott Arniel.
