Hockey legend Dominik Hasek has been clear in his criticism of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He has, among other things, campaigned against Russian participation in the Olympic Games and also raised his voice in connection with Russian star Alexander Ovechkin recently breaking Wayne Gretzky's goal record and being praised in the NHL.
It has not gone unnoticed in Russia.
Dmitry Medvedev, former president and now highly placed in the security council, has through an assistant accused Hasek of suffering from "russophobia". He also means that the 60-year-old Czech should be careful when crossing the street and that he should not drink beer in uncontrolled places.
"Absolutely unacceptable", writes the Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala on X about the threats.
The Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský also spoke out on Wednesday:
Medvedev is behaving primitively again.
This time by attacking NHL legend Dominik Hasek for simply telling the truth - the truth about Russia's war and how they exploit sports to promote it. Such threats may be normal in Putin's Russia, but not in the civilized world!
Dominik Hasek has sent a message to the International Olympic Committee and the International Ice Hockey Federation to inform them that "Russia's former president Medvedev has threatened to kill me".
The Czech Interior Minister Vit Rakušan says that Hasek will receive necessary protection, if needed.
