Crystal Palace was founded as a professional football club on September 10, 1905 – although there are football historians who claim that the association saw its dawn as early as 1861.
That the current Premier League club from south London has some connection to the earlier amateur club from the 19th century with the same name has, however, been rejected by the Football Association FA.
Two Final Losses
Crystal Palace has previously lost two FA Cup finals – both against Manchester United in 1990 and 2016 – but now the nearly 120-year title drought is over.
A rolling red and blue sea at Wembley Stadium – over 84,000 spectators – could enjoy that the FA Cup title was in hand via a 1–0 win over Manchester City.
It's very special. I'm speechless. We met a team that has been the best team in the world for such a long time, says final hero Eberechi Eze.
His winning goal came already after a quarter of an hour. Then Eze distinctly put the ball behind Manchester City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega – after a fine pass from Daniel Muñoz.
In the 34th minute, Manchester City got a golden opportunity to equalize. Then Tyrick Mitchell acted clumsily in his own penalty area, a seasoned Bernardo Silva sought out the Crystal Palace player's leg and City was awarded a penalty.
Forward came Omar Marmoush, but Dean Henderson in the Crystal Palace goal responded with a brilliant save and also took care of the superstar Erling Braut Haaland's rebound.
Kept a Clean Sheet
In the final stages of the match, Henderson stepped forward again and the Crystal Palace goalkeeper kept a clean sheet when the club could secure the historic title.
The giant club Manchester City has already had to hand over the Premier League title to Liverpool after four consecutive league championships and is now heading towards a season without titles.
The last chance for a trophy is the club World Championship in the summer.
