The fire first spread quickly through surrounding forest areas and vegetation before the flames began to move towards residential areas. Several houses and vehicles have been destroyed, local media reports.
Around 1,000 people have fled or been evacuated from the area and have been housed in a sports hall in the nearby town of Omiš, local authorities said.
In addition to firefighters from several parts of the country, four water-bombing aircraft have also been deployed to fight the fire.
Croatia has been hit by several forest fires during the summer, with the heatwave that has swept through Europe bringing record temperatures to several locations along the Adriatic Sea in recent days.
