Scottish author Kate Clanchy receives a public apology from her publisher, four years after a literary scandal.

Author and teacher Clanchy's memoir "Some Kid's I Taught and What They Taught Me" is about her 30 years as an English and poetry teacher in British state schools. The book received attention when it was published in 2019, and was awarded the prestigious Orwell Prize, among other things.

But the book – and Clancy – was later heavily criticized for its portrayal of racialized and autistic children. Kate Clanchy dismissed the criticism, saying she had been innocently accused of racism, but then published a revised edition of the book.

Now the publisher Pan Macmillan is apologizing to the author.

"This was clearly a regrettable series of events in Pan Macmillan's past. I regret the harm caused to Kate Clanchy and many others," the publisher told the BBC .

Kate Clanchy left the publisher in 2022 in the aftermath of the controversy.
