The couple ran a funeral home in the US state of Colorado - but were caught saving 191 bodies. Several of the bodies were said to have been lying for several years at room temperature. Now a settlement has been reached in court.

Police describe the scene as “horrific”: Bodies stacked on top of each other in varying degrees of decomposition. A total of 191 bodies were found in various buildings belonging to the couple. People in the neighborhood, outside Denver, raised the alarm after reacting to the smell coming from the buildings.

The entrepreneurial couple was sentenced to long prison terms this summer for fraud and for handing out fake ashes after alleged cremations. However, the case has given rise to several legal trials, including those concerning violations of the peace of the grift.

The current settlement involves lawsuits from a number of relatives. The court in Denver has accepted a deal that involves the couple pleading guilty and thus receiving a prison sentence of 25 to 50 years, according to the AP.

The couple has previously expressed regret and admitted that "everything went wrong."
