Couple sentenced to caning for sex outside of marriage in Indonesia

An Indonesian couple were each caned 100 times on Tuesday for having sex outside of marriage. The caning took place in a public park in the provincial capital, Banda Aceh.

Sexual relations between unmarried people are prohibited in the strictly Islamic province of Aceh, which applies sharia law.

The couple, whose ages were not disclosed, were beaten by police with a rattan cane, according to an AFP reporter at the scene.
