The Swedish couple disappeared while hiking in a nature reserve on the North Island 37 years ago, prompting a massive search. A then-36-year-old man was arrested and later sentenced to life in prison for the high-profile murder of the two Swedes.
The Supreme Court has now ruled that the man's trial was not held fairly and was partly based on evidence that was "fabricated to secure a conviction," The New Zealand Herald reports.
The man has been on parole since 2010, and prosecutors will now decide whether to retry the case.
