Constitutional Committee Criticizes Swedish Government Leaders

The Constitutional Committee (KU) criticizes the three party leaders in the government. The reason is a debate article about preventing new citizenship.

Debate article was published in November 2024 and stated that it will become harder to become a Swedish citizen.

The party leaders in the government who signed the article - Ulf Kristersson (M), Ebba Busch (KD) and Johan Pehrson (L) - emphasized that before the new law comes into effect, measures should be taken to prevent more Swedish citizenships from being issued.

”Before the new requirements for citizenship are in place, there is reason to act against the issuance of citizenship according to the current legislation,” the party leaders wrote.

The action was reported to the KU by the Green party, which pointed out ministerial interference in conflict with the constitution.

Gets criticism

After examining the case, the KU concludes that the three party leaders should be criticized.

The KU ”reminds” that the government's management of the administration should be done through ordinances, agency assignments and regulatory letters – and not through debate articles.

There is of course no room for action in conflict with the principle of legality, says KU's chairman Ida Karkiainen (S) at a press conference.

The Moderate Party's vice chairman Louise Meijer (M) emphasizes at the same time that the committee has not established that the ministers have instructed the Migration Agency not to follow the law.

In the same article, the ministers have pointed out that the sentences that follow clarify that measures should be taken within the framework of existing legislation, says Meijer at the press conference.

The government later gave the Migration Agency the task of strengthening the security perspective in the assessments.

Even SD's Jimmie Åkesson signed the debate article, but the KU is only examining the government.

The climate minister gets off

The KU is now finished with its annual examination of the government. In total, the committee has received 40 reports, of which 32 have been examined. In six of the cases, shortcomings were found.

Even the incorrect image that was posted on Ebba Busch's Instagram before the law on anonymous witnesses came into effect was criticized.

However, climate and environment minister Romina Pourmokhtari (L) escapes criticism after being reported by opposition parties S, V and MP for ”hiding” how much emissions will increase.

One of the cases that has been paused is the prime minister's actions in the Landerholma affair.
