The subpoena was filed by Democratic Congressman Robert Garcia, who heads the heavy-handed oversight committee investigating the tangle surrounding the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and contains a plea for King Charles to help get his brother across the Atlantic, The Guardian writes.
The announcement comes a week after the king decided to strip Andrew of his princely title, which formally took effect on Thursday.
In his summons, Garcia writes, among other things: "It has been reported that your friendship with Mr. Epstein began in 1999 and you continued to be close both during and after his 2008 conviction for providing minors for prostitution."
There has been much speculation surrounding the prince and his relationship with the notorious financier. On Sunday, the former chief prosecutor for north-west England said the investigation into Mountbatten Windsor, alleging he sexually assaulted trafficking victim Virginia Giuffre in London in the early 2000s, should be reopened.
The ex-prince retired from his public duties back in 2019 after a high-profile interview on the BBC in which he failed to convince the British of his innocence.
He has consistently denied all allegations.
