Trump announced on Sunday that all aid to Colombia will be terminated and called Gustavo Petro a "narcotics leader".
He also stated that new tariffs aimed at Colombia will be announced on Monday and threatened with "measures" to stop the drug cultivation in the country if Petro does not act.
Colombia's Foreign Ministry now announces that the country's ambassador has returned to Bogotá for "negotiations", while Interior Minister Armando Benedetti calls Trump's statements about stopping the drug cultivation with violence a "threat of invasion or military action against Colombia".
The US has since August placed warships off the South American coast and attacked at least six boats that Trump claims transported drugs that would eventually end up in the US.
At least 27 people have been killed so far in the operations, which have primarily focused on the narcotics trade from Venezuela. However, the attention has been directed at Colombia in recent days. According to the US Defense Minister Pete Hegseth, three people have been killed on a transport ship that is alleged to have carried narcotics and is linked to the Colombian armed group National Liberation Army.
