The Clan del Golfo cartel is accused of murdering around 20 police officers and soldiers over the past month. Gustavo Petro has accused the organization of "systematically murdering" members of the country's forces.
Clan del Golfo was formed from paramilitary right-wing groups that fought against Colombian left-wing guerrillas in the 1990s. At a later stage, the network instead focused on the lucrative cocaine trade.
