Colombia's president Gustavo Petro accuses the USA of having violated the country's sovereignty in an attack on a boat in September. Donald Trump responds by calling Petro a "narcotics dealer".

”The American government has committed murder and violated our sovereignty in our territorial waters”, writes Petro in a post on X.

A fisherman ”with no connections to narcotics smuggling” is reported to have been killed in the attack.

The American president counters in a post on Truth Social on Sunday afternoon by describing Petro as an ”illegal drug dealer” who is ”very unpopular”.

Trump demands that Colombia's president must ”stop” allowing drug activities in the country – otherwise ”the USA will end the activities for him, and it will not happen in a nice way”.

He also announces that Washington will stop its aid to Bogotá.

The USA has carried out several attacks against boats in the Caribbean Sea during the last month, mainly off the coast of Venezuela, with the accusation of smuggling narcotics. On Saturday, President Donald Trump stated that two people who survived a boat attack on Friday, one of whom was from Colombia, will be sent back to their home countries.

”We are glad that he is alive and he will be prosecuted in accordance with the law”, commented Petro on the deportation on X.

During the UN General Assembly in September, Petro said that he wants to see a criminal investigation against Donald Trump due to the boat attacks. In total, at least 30 people have been killed in the attacks.
