The index movements were moderate on the American stock exchanges on Tuesday. Neither President Donald Trump's latest tariff play nor Central Bank Governor Jerome Powell's statement on the interest rate seemed to affect the stock market particularly much.
The broad S&P 500 index closed unchanged, the Dow Jones industrial index rose 0.3 percent, and the Nasdaq's technology-heavy composite index gained 0.4 percent.
Questioned in Congress, Powell gave a simple message: Since the US economy is good, there is no reason for the central bank to rush the decision on whether and when to lower the interest rate.
Among individual stocks, Coca-Cola stood out after the soft drink giant reported a quarterly report with higher profits and greater revenue than analysts had predicted. In particular, sales increased in Brazil, China, and the USA. The stock rose 4.7 percent.
