Your wet swimwear can help invasive species to spread. The best way to prevent the spread is to let the swimwear dry.

This summer, vacationing Swedes may unknowingly help invasive species spread between lakes in the country. Wet swimwear and bath toys that have been used in several different lakes risk carrying species from one body of water to another, reports P4 Uppland.

For example, the zebra mussel is highlighted, a species that originates from areas around the Caspian and Black Seas and is classified as one of the world's 100 most invasive species, writes the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management. The County Administrative Board in Skåne has, for example, been forced to use potassium chloride to get control of it.

To avoid spreading the mussel, and other invasive species, biologist Michael Diemer has a practical and effective tip.

What applies here is to empty, wash and dry, he says to P4 Uppland.
