Climate and Environment Minister Romina Pourmokhtari (L) missed the major COP30 Climate Summit in Brazil in November because she was expecting a baby and was therefore unable to travel. No other minister replaced her in person.
And when the Climate Policy Council presented its review of how the government had handled its climate policy last year, no minister was present.
This year it is the same. Pourmokhtari is on parental leave and her substitute Johan Britz will not be attending; instead, State Secretary Helena Dyrssen will receive the council's report.
“Are worried”
WWF sees a negative pattern.
"The government has talked about climate leadership. For us, it means taking responsibility for our policies and participating in major climate events that are taking place," says Martin Wadmark, senior advisor.
He believes that the government is sending signals that indicate a lack of interest in the climate issue.
"We think it shows that people are stepping back and not wanting to pursue climate policy. There are different contexts, one international and one national, but there is a lack of interest in both," he says.
Clear report
Researcher Mathias Fridahl is one of the members of the Climate Policy Council.
"It is difficult for us to have an opinion on who will receive the report. I can say that we have had a good dialogue with the Minister for Climate and her staff. Then it remains to be seen what will happen when the report is received," he says.
The report released today will show that progress on climate change is too slow.
"The report will also clearly show the recommendations we make for what is required to achieve the climate goals, not least from the 2030 perspective."
Johan Britz's press secretary Thea Andersson writes in a message to TT that "Johan Britz looks forward to reading the report."
The Climate Policy Council is an independent expert body that, among other things, reviews how the government's policies lead towards the goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045.
Annually, the council releases a report on the government's work.
