Pike has reportedly returned to the prison where she spent the last 30 years.

"She is grateful for the efforts of the medical staff under these extraordinary circumstances. She continues to receive care in prison," the statement said.

The state of Tennessee failed to execute Pike, despite injecting both her arms with two doses of the lethal drug pentobarbital. She was taken to hospital and put on a ventilator.

Pike was convicted of murdering a fellow student in 1995, when she was 18 years old. The case attracted considerable attention in the United States because of the brutality, the age of those involved and the occult details.
