BYD states in a press release that the company sold 2.26 million electric cars last year, an increase of 28 percent compared to 2024. This means that the company looks set to overtake U.S. automaker Tesla in the number of electric cars sold during a calendar year for the first time.
Tesla announced this week that sales in the fourth quarter of last year could decline by 15 percent compared with 2024, and annual sales are expected to be around 1.6 million cars, reports Bloomberg. For the whole year, that would be a decrease of 8 percent.
BYD (Build Your Dreams) sold a total of 4.6 million vehicles - including hybrid cars, buses and trucks - in 2025, the majority of which were sold in its home market. Outside China, it sold just over one million vehicles, a figure the company wants to increase by over 50 percent in 2026.
In an effort to take market share from Tesla in Europe, BYD is building a factory in Hungary. It was supposed to be completed in December, but work has been delayed. The company also plans a factory in Turkey and one in Spain, Reuters reports.
