The trains are of the maglev type, meaning carriages that lack wheels and are kept suspended by magnets. Propulsion is also provided by magnets along the sides, which "pull" the train.
With this technology, Chinese researchers have already set new speed records of around 800 kilometres per hour. And now they have increased the acceleration to a new record of 5.3 seconds, the authorities and Chinese media say.
Such rapid acceleration is not intended for passenger trains, but it shows what the technology is capable of. For example, it could be used to help aircraft take off from confined spaces.
China also has maglev trains in regular traffic, but the speed has been reduced to around 300 kilometres per hour.
