USA's president Donald Trump can compromise on the issue of tariffs against Canada and Mexico, according to Trade Minister Howard Lutnick. The USA will likely meet the two countries halfway, according to Lutnick.

The news of the American compromise comes on the same day as the 25-percent trade tariffs against Canada and Mexico, and the 20-percent tariffs against China, come into effect.

Lutnick says in an interview with Fox Business that he has spoken on the phone with "the Mexicans and Canadians" during the day and that they have tried to show the USA that "they will do better".

And the president is listening, because you know that he is very, very fair and very reasonable, says Lutnick in the interview.

Meeting in the Middle

The Minister of Trade says further that he believes Trump will reach some kind of solution with Canada and Mexico.

It will not be a pause, but I believe he will come to: do you do more, then I'll meet you halfway somehow. We will probably announce it tomorrow (Wednesday), says Lutnick.

On Tuesday, the news came that Canada is responding with 25-percent tariffs on American goods worth 155 billion Canadian dollars, equivalent to 1.1 billion Swedish kronor.

Canadians are reasonable and we are polite. But we will not back down from a fight. Not when our country – and everyone's well-being – is at stake, said Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at a press conference, reports CNN.

The Canadian tariffs on goods worth 30 billion Canadian dollars will be introduced immediately and tariffs on the remaining 125 billion will be introduced within 21 days.

Trump's Response

Donald Trump's response did not take long to arrive. On his own platform Truth Social, he writes "please explain to Canada's Governor Trudeau that when he introduces retaliatory tariffs against the USA, then our tariffs will immediately increase just as much".

Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Tuesday that she will give notice on Sunday about the extent of Mexico's response to the USA's tariffs.

There is no motive, no reason, and nothing that justifies or supports this decision that will affect our citizens and our countries, said Claudia Sheinbaum.

Canada, China, and Mexico together accounted for 42 percent of the USA's imports last year.
