China stresses that the U.S. must "make the right decision" regarding Taiwan's future. According to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, in talks with U.S. senator Marco Rubio, the issue of Taiwan is of "immediate importance" and poses the greatest risk to the relationship between the two superpowers.
China considers Taiwan to be part of Chinese territory. In practice, Taiwan has been self-governing and separate since the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949.
Beijing has repeatedly threatened to use force to retake the island. The U.S. says it will support Taiwan in the event of an attack.
President Trump is traveling to China in mid-May for talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
